This machine is also budget-friendly, coming in at under $1,600.

XTOOL F1 ULTRA

Now, the xTool F1 Ultra, announced in May 2024, is larger and houses a more powerful 20-watt diode laser and a brand-new 20-watt fiber laser.

That means it can engrave materials with even more power, plus easily engrave metals with the fiber laser. And the speed? Almost double the xTool F1.

This machine is pricier at around $4000, but the extra productivity and capabilities can more than make up for the investment.

Size & Weight

The xTool F1 is a lightweight and compact sidekick, perfect for on-the-go engraving. It measures 7 x 9.3 x 13 inches and weighs 10 lbs. The engraving area is a decent 4.53 x 4.53 inches, with an engraving height of 4.4 inches. You can remove the bottom plate of the F1 to get a little bit more height, or fit an extra large item under the machine and engrave through the opening.

The xTool F1 Ultra is larger and heavier, but still manageable. It measures 10.8 x 14.7 x 19.4 inches tall and weighs 32.4 lbs. The engraving area is almost double the size of the F1, at 8.7 x 8.7 inches, with an engraving height of 5.7 inches.

Laser Types

The xTool F1 comes equipped with a 10W blue light diode laser and a 2W infrared laser. The infrared laser is also a diode laser, but it uses infrared light with lower power.

The xTool F1 Ultra steps it up with a 20W blue diode laser and a 20W fiber laser. The fiber laser is also an infrared laser, but it’s made with optical fibers instead of diodes, giving it a serious power boost.

With the F1, the blue light laser can engrave a wide range of materials like leather, wood, glass, some acrylic, fabrics, and other non-metals. It can also cut through thinner layers of wood, leather, acrylic, glass, and even rock! The infrared laser is great for engraving metals and plastics, but it won’t go too deep into metal.

Using the Machine Safely

When you’re making your one-of-a-kind tumblers and gifts, you don’t want to lose a finger or an eye due to improper protection.

First, xTool requires new users to go through its free Laser Safety Awareness Training before operating the machine.

Next, the xTool Support website provides safety information for the xTool F1 and xTool F1 Ultra.

And it goes without saying, but make sure to read through ALL the instructions from xTool before getting started.

Can the F1 and F1 Ultra cut through materials?

Yes, the F1 can cut through softer materials like paper, wood, leather, MDF, felt, and some dark acrylic with the 10W diode laser. Can I engrave tumblers on the F1 and F1 Ultra?

Yes, you can! You’ll need the slide extension accessory for the F1 and if you want to engrave around the tumbler, the RA2 Pro rotary attachment.

For the F1 Ultra, you’ll want to add the conveyor belt to do large tumblers and/or use the RA2 Pro rotary attachment. If you want to engrave the entire tumbler from top to bottom, the Ultra is a better choice, but it won’t fully cover a longer 40oz tumbler according to tests done by YouTuber Bitner Built Woodworking.

Can I batch engrave on the F1 Ultra without the conveyor?

Yes you can! Just place the items within the workspace and choose the batch engrave setting.

Are xTool lasers compatible with Lightburn?

Yes, you can use them with Lightburn or other third-party software, but they are best suited for the free xTool Creative Space software and app.

Can I engrave a 40 oz. tumbler from top to bottom with the F1 Ultra?

The F1 Ultra does have a larger engraving surface than the F1, but it won’t fully cover a 40 oz. tumbler from top to bottom. According to YouTuber Bitner Built Woodworking, who ran tests on the machine, there was an inch or so left of space at the bottom of the tumbler. Smaller sizes can be engraved seamlessly from top to bottom. See the tests he did here.

Does the F1 Ultra use the same slide extension and purifier as the F1?

No, you’ll need the conveyor belt and larger air purifier for the F1 Ultra.

Do I need to connect my computer constantly to engrave?

No, you can use the xTool Creative Space app on your phone instead. Or with the F1 Ultra, you can save designs directly to a USB drive or to the device itself, then engrave them with the touchscreen controller.
